So, after the vendor fair in April, I've been overwhelmingly busy making flannel board stories to fulfill all my orders. I've been happily cutting away, but I miss producing new stories for my own use. I have nothing new to post!
I do have a few sets I made long ago that I haven't posted yet, and one of those is this week's installment. Completely irrelevant at this time of year, but pretty adorable nonetheless. Here are my Five Fat Turkeys:

Those guys are too labor intensive to make, so I came up with a simpler set, which is available at my shop!
We used to do this only as a finger play, but I find the addition of these cute turkeys and adorable chef makes it even better...
Five Fat Turkeys
Five fat turkeys are we.
(hold up five fingers)
We slept all night in a
tree. (make fingers into fist)
When the cook came around
we couldn’t be found. (thumb of other hand looks around the fist)
Hmmmm….Where did all my
turkeys go?! (thumb wiggles as it talks)
And that’s why we’re here
you see, yippee! (open fist so turkeys can cheer!)
You could also start with
only one turkey in the tree and sing the song for that one turkey, and then add
the other turkeys one by one.
One fat turkey that’s me
I slept all night in a
tree
When the cook came around
I couldn’t be found
Hmmm…Where did all my
turkeys go?
Hmph, hmph, hmph, hmph, hmph, hmph, hmph!
And that’s why I’m here
you see, yippee!
Then have that little guy
call for another turkey friend to join him in the tree, and so on until all
five are in the tree.
We also act this out, with "lots of fat turkeys" hiding in one corner of the room all curled up, and lots of chefs coming to look for them and then stomping away, and then all the turkeys jump up and cheer. It's awesome. Especially if you're a pescatarian like me :)

I saw this set while perusing Flannel Friday's Pinterest pages--it was originally posted here. I love the simplicity of the birds, though when I used this set today for the first time, one of my little girls couldn't stop asking me where the birds' feathers and wings were...

So, I have never read the book this set is based on, but it seems that Birdie (the turquoise bird in the red house above) doesn't have a house, so he and his friends go house hunting together. I named the friends Bluey, Orangie, Yellowey, and Greenie. Of course. Anyway, as they come across each house they discover that although the house is too narrow, short or tall for Birdie, it is just the right size for one of his pals. They all celebrate each new house for their friend, and in the end, Birdie finds the house that is a perfect fit for him.
This is such a simple, simple story, but I cannot tell you how completely enthralled my little two-year-olds were. They fell in love with Birdie and his friends, feather-less and wing-less though they may be.
Once again I've learned a thing or two by visiting Mel's Desk. I think the patterns she creates are amazing, don't you? Put that together with more librarian creativeness like that of Sharon at Rain Makes Applesauce, and you've got the following combo platter:

A quick peek at Flannel Friday's Finger Puppet page sent me off to the store for embroidery floss and needles! Two Little Blackbirds is a song that we do all the time during our Small and Large Group times (the adorable JBrary version linked is a chant--I'll try to find the tune I use and post it here). I don't think I'd ever thought to use finger puppets for it--we just use our thumbs... But these little guys really engage the children, and keep our fingers warm too!
I maybe sewed last when I was in 8th grade, but haven't since then. I will stick to basic stuff--my eyesight is definitely not what it once was!
These were made in the fall, and used a lot in the fall this year, but of course they can be used anytime!
The bats and blue birds above are from Mel's Desk. I love her stuff! My kids had to keep reminding me to say "bats" instead of "birds" when I used the bats. Twenty years of saying "birds" is a hard habit to break!
This is a cute poem to go with these adorable penguins!
